One of the highlights of this year’s Shrewsbury festival is a one-man show of the work of Dave Brown, editorial cartoonist for the Independent newspaper here in the UK. Dave is well known for his weekly Rogues Gallery feature, which pastiches great works of art and reworks them for current affairs – it’s a sort of painterly version of an internet mash-up. Dave has allowed us to preview some of his work here in the run up to the event.

Above: Low takes on Hitler and Mussolini

An exhibition showcasing the best of Sir David Low is at the Political Cartoon Gallery in London from April 23 until June 7.

Low (1891–1963) is considered by many to be the greatest political cartoonist of the 20th Century. This exhibition of his work includes more than 60 original cartoons from before the First World War to the early 1960s. None of the cartoons on show have been exhibited before and include a number that were censored before and during the Second World War.

Many of the originals on show include Low’s most famous creations Colonel Blimp and the TUC Carthorse. The exhibition will also coincide with the launch of a book entitled Low and the Dictators which features the almost private war Low fought against Hitler and Mussolini from the 1920s until the end of the Second World War.

The Political Cartoon Gallery is at 32 Store Street, London WC1E 7BS, and is open Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.30pm and on Saturdays between 11.30am – 5.30pm.

“But is it Art?” by PCOer Nathan Ariss – another contribution to Bloghorn’s sneak preview of a major exhibition which opens in less than a month’s time and is part of this year’s Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival.
In other news, PCOer Clive Collins, a previous cartoonist of the month here, alerts us to a one-off event at the Barbican centre in central London where former Punch cartoonist and Oscar winner Bruce Petty is showing his film called Global Haywire. Clive describes Australian Bruce’s work as in the “zany, big explosive cartoons vein”. Sounds good to us. You can find out more about Petty’s film here.

PCO Artist of the Month for March 2008 is Dave Gaskill and this is one of his cartoon caricatures – of the Rolling Stones.
Dave survived the perils of an engineering apprenticeship to emerge at a draughtsman’s drawing board. He swapped this for a cartoonist’s pen in South Africa and spent the next 13 years working for leading national papers. An Antipodean Period followed in both Australia and New Zealand.

Lured back to Britain to join the Today newspaper in its early days Dave remained as its editorial cartoonist until it was closed nine years later. He moved on to Editorial cartoonist positions on the News of the World, the Mail on Sunday, The Sun and the Sunday Mail.

During this journey Dave has also completed advertising work, book illustration and humorous cartoons for a great variety of markets and picked up a number of awards including 2002 Cartoon Museum Political Cartoonist of the Year.

He is now settled in Lincolnshire with wife and assorted furry animals. Bloghorn says click G for Gaskill.

The New Yorker magazine recently launched a blog called Cartoonist of the Month.

As you might expect, each month a different cartoonist takes the reins and talks about cartooning, their influences, how they work, and so on – while providing lots of cartoons and sketches of course.

This month’s contributor is Barbara Smaller and if you click on the archive section you can see the first two, Mick Stevens and Michael Maslin.
