The Chris Beetles Gallery’s annual illustrators show opens in London this weekend (November 14 and 15).

More than 1,000 original pieces of original artwork, from 1800 to present day, will be on display in The Illustrators 2009. Many of the artists included in the selling exhibition are household names, from Arthur Rackham to John Tenniel to E.H. Shepard to Quentin Blake.

The exhibition includes many cartoonists, such as John Jensen, (Old Flame, 1954, from Lilliput magazine, above) Matt Pritchett, Peter Brookes, H.M. Bateman, Rowland Emett, Giles and Gerard Hoffnung.

A major addition to the roster this year is the work of caricaturist Robert Sherriffs whose stylish line work, seen in the above cartoon of Clark Gable, was commissioned by Punch to bring the excitement of Hollywood film to readers during the 1950s. The exhibition also includes a new selection from the estate of Norman Thelwell.

The gallery is hoping for a big success with the exhibition in the run-up to Christmas, pointing out that this is an accessible and affordable sector of the art market, as more than 80 per cent of the pictures on sale cost less than £2,000.

Accompanying the exhibition will be a catalogue with 200 pages of essays and notes, and more than 400 full-colour images. It will be available from the gallery for £15 plus £3 postage.

With the 2009 Ashes series fast approaching, the Chris Beetles Gallery in London is set to stage A Celebration of Cricket: From Ashes to Zooter

The exhibition runs from July 15 until August 8 and features cartoons, illustrations and watercolours from 200 years of cricket.

More than half the show will be devoted to cartoons. From Sir Len Hutton to Shane Warne, few cricketers of note have escaped the hawk-eye of the cartoonist. The show will feature Glen Baxter, above, Mark Boxer, Tony Husband, Jak, John Jensen, Larry, Nick Newman and many more. It will be opened by Sir Ian Botham, with 10 per cent of all opening night sales going to the charity Leukaemia Research

The Chris Beetles Gallery in London is hosting The Definitive Thelwell from this Wednesday (May 13) until June 6, the first selling show of work by Norman Thelwell in 20 years.

Thelwell is best remembered for his fat ponies and their long-suffering young riders, but he was a wide-ranging artist, who tackled many subjects for many papers and magazines, including Punch, with which he developed a close relationship over 25 years.

He had a strong understanding of the British character, and may be considered the post-war heir to Pont of Punch. From estate agents to battery farmers, hunt protesters to harassed motorists, Thelwell chronicled the minutiae of our lives.

An accomplished landscape painter, Thelwell produced detailed, naturalistic settings for lively, comic figures that represent what he called, “the endearing lunacy of human behaviour”. The Definitive Thelwell provides a comprehensive cross-section of this work, with more than 150 drawings and watercolours. The show includes landscapes and seascapes as well as cartoons.

The Chris Beetles Gallery in London is currently hosting a show entitled The Illustrators 2008 .

The annual show features work by illustrators and cartoonists, such as Quentin Blake, left, from 1800 to the present day. It runs until January 3.

The gallery says that the exhibition, which features more than 1,000 pictures, is the world’s largest selection of original illustrative artwork for sale. Accompanying the exhibition will be a 140-page catalogue which contains biographies, notes and 342 illustrations. It is priced £15. The PCO: Great British cartoon talent

An exhibition entitled Cartoonists 2008 opens at the Chris Beetles Gallery in London on April 8 and runs until May 3.

It is the gallery’s second annual show devoted to the art of British cartooning, following on from its successful You Havin’ a Laugh? exhibition last year.

The show features cartoonists from publications such as The Times, The Sunday Times, Private Eye, The Spectator, Daily Express, London Evening Standard, the Telegraph and The Economist, and includes PCO members Andy Davey, John Jensen, Royston Robertson, Kipper Williams, and Mike Williams.

Original artwork is on sale, at prices ranging from £50 to £5,000.
